Hey Mustang fans!
My name is Alexa and I am a senior this year on the rowing team. As an "experienced" rower, I would like to address an issue that really "grinds my gears." Perhaps you have heard of the tune, "row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream." Yeah, we all wish rowing was pleasant like a dream. However, for the Mustang crew, it's anything BUT a dream. We are at the peak of our twenty hour week practices and training hard. We erg, lift, run, and row-that is our life.
In a week the Mustangs head to Austin for Head of the Colorado. We hope to do really well in this regatta to prepare for Tennessee in two weeks. We have two very strong eight boats this year, and an especially strong freshman class. Every one of them has stepped up in workouts and has proven to the upper classmen their dedication. As Doug says, you have three choices: a social life, academic life, and rowing … pick two. I personally go for social and rowing …. just kidding, my parents would not be too pleased with my grades.
So next time you hear the song, "Row, row, row, your boat," know that the Mustang crew is not rowing like a pleasant dream. That is just a stereotype like saying people in Dallas ride horses to class. (I actually try to hitch a ride in the golf carts). The team is working harder than ever, but we know it will all be worth it in the end. I hope you all keep up with the Mustang rowing stats and have a great Halloween!
