DALLAS (SMU) -SMU junior rower Emily Carstens is one of 12 Conference USA student-athletes to earn the C-USA Spirit of Service Award for the spring athletics season, C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced today.
Carstens earned a spot on the 2012 All-Conference USA team after leading the Mustangs to a victory in the Varsity 8+ Petite Final at the C-USA Championships. She also paced SMU to a spot in the final at the Oklahoma Invitational.
A native of Tulsa, Okla., she has made an immediate impact with her service to the Dallas community. She volunteered with the Get Kidz Fit Fest, a fun and free fitness festival for children and their families put on by the Dallas Area Coalition to Prevent Childhood Obesity. More than 3,000 plus youngsters and their families attended this year's event.
She has also volunteered at the Stonewall Jackson Elementary School carnival and silent auction, and the Halloween Carnival for the Foundry Church. Carstens participated in Relay for Life, organizing a team to represent SMU rowing. She also continues to work with the Big Brother, Big Sisters of Dallas. Carstens is a three-time selection to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll as a business management major.
