Mustangs Set For Inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship

DALLAS (SMU) -- The SMU rowing program is set for the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship, which takes place Sunday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. The event begins at 7 a.m. CT. Visit the American's Championship Central page for the Championship program, schedule, live results and video.

Teams participating at the Championship include the Mustangs, UCF, Connecticut, Louisville, Rutgers, Temple and Villanova.

Conference Favorites...

The Mustangs' Novice 8+ crew was one of only four crews to earn American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honors during the 2014 season. The crew earned the award on April 9 after a first-place finish at Alabama. Coxswain Molly O'Connell, Savannah Moody, Lindsay Heyman, Sydney Severson, Mackenzie Daly, Dominique Earland, Amanda Esposito, Brittany Courteau and Meghan Klein defeated crews from Alabama and Eastern Michigan in a time of 7:47.

Louisville's Second Varsity 8+ crew led the American with three nods, while UCF's Varsity 4+ crew had two and Louisville's Novice 8+ took the final award.

Against The Field...

En route to a Mustang Frosh/Novice 4+ Grand Final Championship at the Knecht Cup, SMU's time bested a crew from Temple in all three races. In heat three of the first round, the Mustangs finished 2.39 seconds ahead of the Owls. However, the semifinals saw over a 15 second difference, and in the Grand Final the Ponies first-place finish bested TU by over 25 seconds. The Frosh/Novice 4+ crew also defeated affiliate-member Villanova's `A' and `B' crews in semifinal action by 19.08 and 36.32 seconds, respectively.

SMU's Second Varsity 8+ crew saw both Temple and Connecticut in the Third Final at the event, finishing third ahead of TU (fourth) and Connecticut (sixth).

Last Time Out...

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU rowing program picked up a pair of victories in the Varsity 4+ and Varsity 8+ races on April 26 at White Rock Lake.

It was the last home event for the Mustangs and the Varsity 8 crew left it all out on the lake. The crew of Maggie Jones, Savannah Moody, Lindsay Heyman, Loni Albrecht, Miranda Zsigmond, Sydney Severson, Chantelle Conley, Hanna Axene and Lauren Moore clocked in at 6:42.5 to defeat the Bronchos. The time was a season-best for the crew, who bested a time of 6:45.27 from April 19th's Lawless Cup. SMU's Second Varsity 8+ crew finished the 2k course in 7:04.3. UCO's crew took the second spot at 6:50.3.

In Varsity 4+ action, Moyra Tran, Jessica Clouse, Dominique Earland, Bailey Adams and Nikole Metz outpaced their Broncho competition with an 8:06.37 finish in the event. UCO finished in 8:12.74.
