DALLAS (SMU) - Sydney Crews signed a National Letter of Intent to compete on the women's rowing team at SMU, head coach Doug Wright announced. The standout swimmer from Fairview, Texas will join the Mustangs this fall.
Crews qualified for the Texas state championships in both 2012 and 2013, representing Lovejoy High School in the backstroke. As a senior, she finished 13th in the state with a 1:00.28 in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke, and led Lovejoy to an eighth-place finish in the 200-freestyle relay in 2012. As a junior, she was also on the 200-medley relay, which finished 10th, and the 400-free relay, which finished ninth. She also competes in the 100 free and 100 fly.
The 6-1 Crews was team captain during her senior season, and was an assistant captain as a junior. Also a standout in the classroom, Crews is a member of the National Honor Society and earned Academic All-State honors as a junior and senior. She is also on the school debate team, plays violin for the high school orchestra, is a member of FFA and volunteers at the Collin County Animal Hospital.
"Sydney is a great example of the kind of student and athlete we're looking for in our program," Wright said. "She is a natural team leader, great student and a tremendous athlete. We're excited about her joining our team and look forward to her development as a top level rower at SMU."
