April 4, 2013
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's rowing team splashes back into competition this weekend at the 40th-annual San Diego Crew Classic Saturday and Sunday at Mission Bay in San Diego, Calif. The Mustangs are racing in the event for the fourth straight year.
The Mustangs posted their fastest 2-km time of the season last year at the San Diego Crew Classic, recording a 7:08.80. SMU was also fast in 2011, scoring a 7:04.06, which is the fastest time SMU has posted at the event. Both times are more than 20 seconds faster than SMU's inaugural race at the event in April 2010. The Mustangs have already broken the seven-minute mark this season, finishing with a 6:53.40 in a win against Creighton in Dallas during the first event of the spring season.
The SMU 1st Varsity 8+ will race against San Diego, Loyola, Kansas State, St. Joesph's and Bates College at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, while the 2nd Varsity 8+ will compete against California, Wisconsin, Washington State, Iowa and Kansas State at 10:50 a.m. The 2V8+ battled both Kansas State and Iowa at the Longhorn Invitation in its last competition, and the 1V8+ raced against Kansas State, but the Mustangs came up short in each of the three races.
The preliminary heats will be used to determine pairings for the finals, which are scheduled to be held Sunday morning. SMU's best finish in a Sunday race was second by the 1V8+ in 2010.
