DALLAS (SMU) - Fresh off a win on their home lake against Creighton in the opening race of the spring season, the Mustangs look to build on the momentum this weekend at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. SMU will compete in head-to-head races against Texas, Iowa and UCF on Friday and Saturday, before the finals of the three-day event on Sunday.
"I am excited to open the invite against a very tough Texas team. They are well coached and always give a great fight," head coach Doug Wright said. "I am looking forward to seeing all of the hard work and effort our team has been putting in show on the race course. Tough competition is the only place to really extract great performances and I am confident our team will put their best efforts forward on the course throughout the weekend."
SMU and Texas will be the first boats on the water Friday, with the 1st Varsity 4 competition starting at 4 p.m. The Varsity 8+ crews, which swept the races against Creighton, will follow with the 2nd 8+ at 4:10 and the 1st 8+ at 4:20. The Mustangs will take on Iowa in the same format on Saturday at 9:50 a.m., and battle UCF at 5:40 p.m. The first three races will be used to set up the finals pairings on Sunday, beginning at 8 a.m.
Last season, the SMU 1st Varsity 8+ recorded a 7:38.0 as its fastest time at the Longhorn Invitational. Against Creighton last weekend, the Mustangs won the race with a 6:53.4, which would've won the race in Austin last season by nearly 30 seconds. SMU's 2nd Varsity 8+ crew also cut more than 35 seconds off its 2012 Longhorn Invitational time against Creighton on Saturday.
