OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (SMU) - The SMU women's rowing Varsity 4+ won the Petite Final at the Conference USA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Saturday, finishing with a time of 7:52.29 to hold off second place Alabama by more than four seconds for the victory.
The Mustangs finished 11th overall, scoring 10 total points. The 1st Varsity 8+ posted one of its fastest times of the season, recording a time of 6:56.66 to finish fifth in the finals, less than 10 seconds from a win. The SMU 2nd Varsity 8+ also finished fifth in the finals with a time of 7:41.17. Oklahoma won the overall championship, scoring wins in the V4+ and 2V8+, but finished 2nd to Texas in the 1V8+ Grand Final.
The Mustangs concluded the season with wins against Creighton and Kansas State by the 1V8+ crew, and the V4+ crew defeated Alabama, Tulsa, UCF and West Virginia. SMU got faster at the conference championships, winning the rematch against both the Knights and the Golden Hurricane crews, which had both previously beaten the Mustangs in regular season events.
Senior Emily Carstens was named to the C-USA All-Conference Team. The team captain led the 1V8+ crew to a win during the season, and was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team.
