MIAMI, Fla. (SMU) -The SMU women's rowing team concluded its regular season at Miami, racing against the Hurricanes, UCF and Old Dominion. The Mustangs posted their fastest time of the weekend against ODU in the 1st Varsity 8+, recording a 7:12.7 despite a headwind which at times gusted up to 20 mph, but the Lady Monarchs edged out SMU with a time of 7:10.1.
"The V8+ finally raced to their capabilities Saturday afternoon in really windy conditions," head coach Doug Wrightsaid. "I was really pleased with that performance. It was representative of our capabilities and in alignment with our overall approach to racing. When we race like that, we are right there with UCF and Old Dominion and several others within the conference. We need to focus the next three weeks on learning how to be more consistent from race to race."
The SMU 2V8+ finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:38.6, and the V4+ recorded a 9:03.9, but neither boat was able to keep pace with ODU. In the first competition of the weekend, SMU was swept by conference-foe UCF. The 1V8+ had a time of 7:34.8, while the 2V8+ finished in 7:49.9. The V4+ posted a 9:29.8, with all three crews recording their slowest times of the competition against the Knights.
The Mustangs came up short against a Miami crew which posted the fastest time of the event on Sunday, winning the 1V8+ race with a time of 6:54.4. SMU recorded a 7:22.9 in the event. The 2V8+ was just shy of its fastest time of the weekend against the Hurricanes, posting a 7:42.0, and the V4+ was nearly on its fastest pace, recording a 9:09.4 in its final race of the weekend.
SMU will compete in the Conference USA Championships on May 18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
