CHERRY HILL, N.J. (SMU) - The SMU rowing team placed a pair of crews in finals after its performances on Saturday at the Knecht Cup on Mercer Lake.
In Frosh/Novice 4+ action, SMU moves on to compete in the Grand Final on Sunday. The Ponies crossed the line in 7:53.01 in the third semifinal heat, turning in the only sub-eight minute time in the event on day one.
"We had to make a switch in the lineup after Julia Neppl was called up to race in the First Varsity 8+ race," assistant coach Bill McLean said. "This crew had never rowed together with Lindsay Heyman coming in as stroke, but they turned in their fastest time this season."
In its first race of the event, the Mustangs won their heat, turning in the fifth fastest time overall of 8:16.36. Within the third heat, SMU finished ahead of American Athletic Conference member Temple, who also advanced with a time of 8:18.75.
"It was very exciting to see them get out in front and hold off the other crews," McLean added.
Also advancing was the Second Varsity 8+ crew that clocked in at 7:20.02 in the day's first race to earn its spot in the afternoon semifinals. Its semifinal time of 7:06.63 was good for a spot in the Third Level Final, taking place on Sunday.
"It has been an exciting day for both the student-athletes and coaches," McLean said. "All gave a real team effort given the challenges we faced going into the afternoon semifinals."
