KANSAS CITY, Kan. (SMU) - The SMU rowing team defeated Drake in First and Second Varsity 8+ as well as Varsity 4+ action in the morning session at Wyandotte County Lake on Saturday.
The 1v8+ crew turned in its fastest time so far this spring with a 7:00.4, which was over 12 seconds ahead of the crew from Drake that clocked in at 7:12.6. In the 2v8+ the Mustangs saw improvement from last week as well, clocking in at 7:10.6, ahead of DU's 7:29.
"We were really focused on fast, faster, fastest with our approach," Head Coach Doug Wright said. "I feel like we did a good job improving time, but we should have been faster."
SMU's final victory of the morning session came as the V4+ crew clocked in at 8:03.1 finishing ahead of Drake by over 28 seconds. The Novice 4+ crew turned in an 8:35 in its race.
In the afternoon session, the Mustangs clashed with Kansas State. The 1V8+ crew saw an improvement in its time as they finished in 6:57.0, but was outpaced by Kansas who clocked in at 6:42.3.
"I think we over thought the rate change to improve the time and lost some rhythm in the process," Wright added. "We'll work on that this week going into Alabama next week."
In 2V8+ action, the Ponies posted a 7:20 against Kansas.
The Mustangs V4+ crew faced Kansas and Kansas State crews to close out competition and posted a time of 8:25.4.
SMU's novice 4+ posted an 8:36.5 in an afternoon race against Kansas.
SMU is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide and Eastern Michigan. Check SMUMustangs.com for ways to follow the event.
