AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) - The SMU rowing team competed in the Longhorn Invitational, hosted by the University of Texas, this weekend, battling some of the toughest teams it will face all season in San Diego, UCF, Kansas State and Oklahoma, racing against the Sooners for the second time in as many weeks.

The 2nd Varsity 8+ crew posted its fastest time of the weekend during the Saturday morning session, posting a 7:54.4 in a loss to Oklahoma. The 1st Varsity 8+ posted its fastest time against San Diego on Sunday morning, finishing in 7:38.0, coming up 15 seconds short of victory.

The 1st Varsity 4+ team, which has three first-year rowers and a first-year coxswain, improved as the weekend went on, posting its fastest time of 9:25.4 against San Diego in the final race of the weekend. SMU ran a total of 12 races during the event, four by each crew and three against each opponent. The Mustangs came up short in each race, but continue to get better as practice time on the water increases.

After racing on back to back weekends, the Mustangs will take next weekend off before racing in the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif., on March 31 and April 1.
