DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU rowing team got off to a fast start to the spring season, sweeping the Varsity 8+ races against Creighton Saturday in windy conditions at White Rock Lake. The Mustangs were nearly 15 seconds in front of Creighton in the 1st Varsity 8+ race, finishing the course with a time of 6:53.4, the only boat of the day to post a time under seven minutes.
Seniors Emily Carstens, Claira McElroy and Esther Kolkman led the veteran group in the 1st Varsity crew, which also includes three juniors in Emily McCombs, Lauren Moore and coxswain Maggie Jones.
SMU's 2nd Varsity 8+ was nearly as fast, completing the race in 7:18.0 to score the second win of the day for the Mustangs, beating Creighton's team which posted a time of 7:39.5. The Bluejays also earned two race victories, edging out the Mustangs in the Varsity 4+ and the Novice 8+.
The Mustangs next race is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, March 22-24, in Austin, Texas, at the Longhorn Invitational. The event will be the second of three competitions in four weeks for SMU.
