OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (SMU) - The Mustangs advanced to the championship round of the Oklahoma Invitational after winning their bracket in the first event of the championship season. SMU earned 24 points on Friday, winning two of the three races, and continued the momentum on Saturday, winning four out of six races to win its bracket by 27 points.

"I'm very pleased with the results over the first two days of competition," head coach Doug Wright said. "We haven't had very much time on the water yet this season, so I am excited to see the team competing as well as it is."

SMU opened the weekend against Creighton, sweeping the two Varsity 8+ races, taking a 22-second win in the 1st Varsity 8+ with a time of 7:48.08, and holding on for a five-second win in the 2nd V8+, completing the course in 8:07.09. Creighton edged out the Mustangs in the Varsity 4 to take three points, but SMU had already garnered 24 to finish the first day in second place.

The Mustangs kept the fast pace Saturday morning, picking up wins against Oklahoma City University in the Varsity 4 and the 1st 8+, edging out the opponent by three second in the 8+ and winning by nearly a full minute in the V4. The Mustangs nearly swept the morning session, but Tulsa got off to a quicker start in the 2nd V8+. SMU was closing the gap at the end, but the Golden Hurricane held on for the win.

The Mustangs swept the V8+ races from the University of Central Oklahoma in the afternoon session, picking up another 24 points to finish with an event-high 75 points, winning bracket two to advance to Sunday's final against host Oklahoma, who won bracket one with 72 points.

The SMU 1st V8+ posted its fastest time of the invitational, posting a 7:45.62 to win by just under seven seconds. The 2nd V8+ team beat UCO by almost 32 seconds, finishing the course in 8:20.06.

The Mustangs will take on the Sooners in three races starting Sunday at 1:30 p.m., to determine the champion of the Oklahoma Invitational.
