Aug. 12, 2013
DALLAS - The SMU women's golf program will compete in nine regular season tournaments and the Inaugural American Athletic Conference Women's Golf Championship in 2013-14, head coach Jeanne Sutherland announced on Monday.
"We are very excited about our 2013-14 schedule, because it allows us an opportunity to play the best teams in the nation," Sutherland said. "As we continue to improve and climb the rankings, it is important to challenge our players with great golf courses and the toughest competition we can find. We did that with this year's schedule."
The Mustangs will open with the Golfweek Invitational (Sept. 23-25) in Wolcott, Colo., a tournament featuring a golf program from each of the women's golf conferences in the nation. Sutherland's squad will also complete in Norman, Okla. (Oct. 5-7), Austin (Oct. 13-15) and San Antonio (Oct. 27-29) to wrap-up the fall season.
SMU will open its spring with a pair of tournaments in Florida, opening in Sorrento at the UCF Challenge (Feb. 9-11) before returning to the Sunshine State for the Central District Invitational (Feb. 17-18). The squad will open March in Hawaii at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational (Mar. 11-12), before taking part in the LSU Invitational (Mar. 21-23).
Dallas Athletic Club will once again host the Mustangs' lone home tournament of the campaign as SMU brings 14 teams to Dallas for the SMU Invitational (Apr. 4-6).
The American Athletic Conference will host its first women's golf tournament in Orlando, Fla., from April 20-22.
SMU is coming off a 13th-place finish at its first NCAA Regional since 2007, and were led at last year's NCAA Central Regional (Norman, Okla.) by now sophomore Jenny Haglund. Four of the five Mustangs that competed in the Regional last season return to this 2013-14 squad.
