INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – The No. 52/52 SMU women’s golf team was selected to the 2014 NCAA Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla., the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Selection Committee announced on Monday. The three-day 54-hole Stillwater Regional will start on May 8 and be played at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

“We’re excited to qualify for NCAA’s for the second-straight year,” head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. “The next step is to make it to the Championships. You always want to get better as the season progresses, and I think that we are peaking at the right time of year. We’ll have a good week of practice this week, and we look forward to competing next week.”

SMU is making its second-consecutive trip to the postseason in Sutherland’s third year on the Hilltop. Prior to last year’s invite, the Mustangs had not made a regional since competing in the Central Regional in 2007. The selection is the Mustangs’ sixth NCAA Regional in program history, with all six coming in the last 11 years.

72 teams and 18 individuals received bids to the NCAA Regionals on Monday. The top eight teams and the top two individuals from non-qualifying teams will advance to the 2014 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships that are set to take place May 20-23 at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

The Mustangs will be looking for their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1992 next month. SMU has qualified for the NCAA Championships six times in its history.

SMU is coming off a third-place finish at the Inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship. Sophomore Jenny Haglund won the individual tournament, finishing the three-day event with a two-over 218. The Mustangs’ third-place finish tied the season-best finish in a tournament.
