NORMAN, OKLAHOMA (SMU) - Freshman Lacey Jones is tied for the lead and the SMU women's golf team is just three strokes out of the lead and sits in fourth place following one round of play at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the 5,920-yard, par-70 Trails Golf Club.
Jones, an Oklahoma native, shot an even-par 72 over the first 18 and is tied with Baylor's Meredith Jones and Tulsa's Cas Bridge in the top spot. The trio leads a pack of five golfers who are tied for fourth at 1-over. Included in the group tied for fourth is SMU sophomore Laura Cross. Kristina Rothengatter is tied for 15th at 4-over 76, while Ashley Deatherage rounds out the SMU scorers at 11-over 83 and is tied for 64th. SMU's Whitney Eckert is competing in the event as an individual and is tied for 76th at 13-over 85.
SMU posted a team total of 299 and trails Baylor, who leads at 296. No. 17 Missouri and No. 23 Tulsa are tied for second at 298. The 16-team field also includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Kansas State, Nebraska, North Texas, Oklahoma City, Oral Roberts, Redlands Community College, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Tech and UTEP.
The second round was scheduled to be completed on Sunday, but inclement weather forced the completion of the second round to Monday. The third and final round will also be played Monday.
