IRVING, Texas (SMU) - SMU freshman Jenny Haglund helped the Mustangs win their third event of the season at the Central District Invitational in Parrish, Fla., on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, Haglund was given Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week for her individual efforts.
Haglund finished Central District tied for third. The native of Sweden had her biggest moment on the 18th hole during the final round, holing a 30-foot chip shot to put SMU in the lead for good.
Illness struck Haglund last semester and limited her to just four events this season. She is excited to be back playing at a high level.
"I am really looking forward to staying healthy and to be able to practice and play again," Haglund said. "Florida was a blast and I was so excited to be back playing again, and that we won made it all so much better."
The Mustangs are now ranked in the top 40 of the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings, and have been climbing fast. Naturally, the team has high aspirations for the rest of the season.
"For now we are getting ready for our next tournament in two weeks," Haglund said. "Our goal is to go all the way to nationals, and I believe we can. Individually I will just play my best golf and see how far that will take me and my team. "
SMU will play in the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., March 8-10.
