NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - Sophomore Jenny Haglund shot a three-over 73 and senior Maria Elena Villamil recorded a four-over 74 to lead the SMU women's golf team to a 22-over 302 in the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Sunday at Belmar Golf Club.
"We fought really hard to get the score we got today," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "We gave up a lot of shots on three holes; four, five and six. I'm proud of their effort out there, and how they battled the windy conditions."
Villamil shot an even-par 36 on the front after birding both the eighth and the ninth holes to close out her day (team started on hole No. 10). Haglund also birdied the eighth and the ninth to wrap-up her afternoon, her third and fourth birdies of the day. Villamil enters Monday's final round in 13th, while Haglund starts the final 18 holes in 29th.
In her first tournament with the Mustangs, freshman Lindsey McCurdy was third on the team Sunday, carding a seven-over 77. McCurdy birdied three holes on the day, including two on the back nine on her way to a one-over 35.
Only seven strokes separate the Mustangs and the sixth-place trio of Florida State, Texas State and Kent State.
The third and final round will tee-off Monday morning.
