Oct. 5, 2013
NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - Senior Maria Elena Villamil shot a three-over 73 to lead the SMU women's golf team to a 26-over 306 in the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic on Saturday at Belmar Golf Club.
"We had a rough day on the course today," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "The conditions were difficult, and we didn't respond as well as we could have to the adverse conditions. Our practice following the round was very focused, and I think we'll come out ready to play a better round tomorrow."
Villamil, who carded four birdies on the day, is in a tie for 13th heading into Sunday's second round.
Junior Jennifer Park shot a two-over on the front to pace her six-over 76 in the opening round of the tournament. Park's performance was good enough for 32nd on the day. Sophomore Jenny Haglund shot a seven-over 77 (37th) and classmate Alexandra Rossi recorded a 10-over 80 (63th) to round out SMU's counting scores in the first round.
Freshman Lindsey McCurdy carded a 16-over 86 in her collegiate debut.
Oklahoma State and Arizona State head into the second round as co-leaders, after shooting matching 13-over 293s. OSU's Jayde Panos shot a three-under 67 to lead all individuals in the first round.
