STILLWATER, Okla. (SMU) - Sophomore Alexandra Rossi and junior Jennifer Park carded a pair of 74s to lead the SMU women's golf team to a 15-over 303 on Friday morning in the NCAA Central Regional Second Round at Karsten Creek Golf Club. The Mustangs enter tomorrow's final round in 19th place on the team leaderboard.
"We had four players play solid golf out there today," head coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "I don't think we played quite well enough to make a big jump up the leaderboard, but we played smart golf throughout the round. We got a beautiful day, and it's a beautiful course. It has been a pleasure to play here in this event. We're looking forward to tomorrow's third round, another chance to improve on what we did today."
Rossi shot an even-par 36 on the front nine Friday, holing her two birdies of the day in the first nine holes. Park split her two birdies between the front and back halves of the golf course, in addition to 13 pars on the day. The Mustang junior's two-over gave Park an eight-stroke improvement from the first to the second round, while Rossi improved on her first-round score by four strokes.
Freshman Katie Page also bettered her score by four strokes, using a one-over back nine and a birdie on 18 to finish her second round with a 78. Page's other birdie came on the par-three third, after the SMU freshman hit the pin with her tee shot.
Senior Maria Elena Villamil enters Saturday's final round tied with Rossi for 50th place in the 125 player field at eight-over. Villamil was one-over on the front nine, recording three birdies in the opening nine holes, including back-to-back birdies on the par-three third and the par-four fourth.
The third round will tee-off Saturday, with the Mustangs' first tee-time beginning at 12:56 p.m.
