C-USA Championship Results

GULF SHORES, Ala. (SMU) - After placing 18th a year ago as a sophomore, Felicia Espericueta proved this week, that now as a junior, she is one of the top players in Conference USA. With two individual wins to start the 2011-12 season, the junior capped off an impressive season by shooting a 4-over (74-73-73=220) for a second-place finish at the C-USA Championship at the Peninsula Golf Club.

"I was very pleased with Felicia's play this week," said SMU head coach Jeanne Sutherland. "She played hard and was very steady. She struck the ball well throughout the three days and hit a lot of greens."

Throughout the three-day tournament, Espericueta's steady play led the Mustangs to a fourth-place finish, the program's best result at the conference tournament since 2008. The final round saw SMU produce its best round of the tournament with a 305. For the tournament, the Ponies carded a 929 which was tied for fourth with Memphis. No. 33 Tulsa won the championship with an 884.

Aside from Espericueta, the Mustangs other four golfers each finished in the field's top 35. After a 6-over on the last day, Maria Elena Villamil finished 29th. Three back of the sophomore was senior Jennifer Hooper who finished tied for 31st at 23-over. Right behind the senior was Caitlin Pisciotta and Elizabeth Wells at 24-over, tied for 33rd. Wells came up big for SMU in the final round as the senior shot a 3-over, 75, two strokes back of Espericueta.

"Our goal was to win the tournament, but with that said, I was pleased with the way that the girls played," Sutherland said. "They really fought hard for everything over the last three days.

"It was certainly sad today to see Jen and Liz's Mustang careers come to an end."
