TUCSON, Ariz. (SMU)Maria Elena Villamil led the SMU women’s golf team today, carding a season-low round of 72 to open the Mountain View Collegiate. The sophomore came back with a 74 in round two and is currently tied for 20th place at 2-over par with 18 holes to play.

Battling through injuries, with only four golfers going in each round, the Mustangs sit 13th place after carding a 605 through 36 holes. In the first round, the Mustangs tied their third-lowest team score of the season with a 300.

Jennifer Hooper and Caitlin Pisciotta each carded a 155 through two rounds. Felicia Espericueta shot a 3-over (75) in the first round, while Elizabeth Wells was 2-over in the second round.

“We were managing some injuries today, so we played with four in both rounds by design,” said SMU head coach Jeanne Sutherland. “The team did well and worked hard to bring in the best score they could. We hope to play well tomorrow and feel good knowing that we will have five in the lineup.”

Final round action begins tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. CT.
