RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (SMU) -
Senior Felicia Espericueta
shot a 73 in the final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic to place 11th as the SMU Mustangs finished in a tie for ninth on Tuesday.
The event was the first for the Mustangs during the spring season, and the team now has a good focus on what they need to improve upon to have a shot at the Conference USA title.
"It shows us where our game is," Head Coach Jeanne Sutherland said. "It's a good first event for the spring. We battled pretty well, and we have a lot to take from it."
Espericueta played consistently over the final two rounds, shooting just one-over par on Monday and Tuesday combined.
"She was pretty solid the whole tournament," Sutherland said of Espericueta. "She hit the ball well all three rounds and played fairly mistake-free golf."
The tournament was hosted by No. 9 Purdue at the Rio Mar Beach Resort. The course played as a par-72, 6,191-yard venue for the three-day, 54-hole event. Only one of the 15 teams in the tournament was not ranked in the top 100 of the GolfWeek/Sagarin rankings. The Mustangs are currently ranked No. 36.
SMU will play next at the Central District Invitational at the River Wilderness Golf Club in Parrish, Fla., hosted by Michigan State. The two-day event will start Saturday.
