DALLAS (SMU) - SMU equestrian coach Haley Schoolfield announced the signing of Taylor Schmidt to a National Letter of Intent today.

"Coach Burton and I are thrilled to welcome Taylor to the Mustang family," said Schoolfield. "She brings excellent academics along with stellar athletic abilities to the Hilltop. Taylor's familiarity with catch-riding horses at a high level will make her an instant asset to our team."

Schmidt, a native of Batavia, Ill., won the 2012 Region 4 ASPCA Maclay Finals, beating out 72 other competitors. In the 2012 Horse Shows by the Bay Circuit, Schmidt claimed the first-place USEF Medal, was the Low Junior Jumper Champion, Small Junior Hunter Champion, leading Junior Jumper Ride and leading Equitation Rider. She trains with Missy Clark, Tom Wright and Donald Cheska of North Run Farm in Vermont.

The No. 10 SMU hosts No. 1 South Carolina at 10 a.m. on Sunday at BuckBranch Farm.
