DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 9 SMU equestrian team announced the signing of Erin Nelson to a national letter of intent today.
"We are thrilled to have Erin join us on the Hilltop next season," head coach Haley Schoolfield said. "With her vast experience at the top level of the hunters and jumpers, we know that Erin has the ability to continue to elevate our team."
The Flower Mound, Texas, native was the 2011 Zone 7 High Amateur Owner Jumper and Low Amateur Owner Jumper Champion, and took fourth place in high jumpers. She placed first in the 2011 Gulfcoast II and III $10,000 Junior Amateur Owner Classic. Nelson had a dominating performance at the 2011 Pin Oak Charity Horse Show as she was the Low Amateur Owner Jumpers Circuit Champion, High Junior Amateur Owner Jumper Champion and bonus rider, and took first in the $10,000 High Junior Amateur Owner Classic. She also finished eighth in the Devon Horse Show Junior Jumpers and earned the Top 3 Shellano Style of Riding Award. Nelson trains with Wilhem Genn of Lebanon, Ohio.
Nelson joins Mary Abruzzese, Alex Butterworth and Schaefer Raposa as signees for 2012-13.
The Mustangs are coming off a season in which the team earned its first win in the NCEA Championships, defeating Tennessee-Martin, 5-3. SMU fell to eventual champion Baylor and lost on a tiebreaker to Kansas State in the consolation round.
