WELLINGTON, Fla. (SMU) - SMU freshman Schaefer Raposa was the champion of the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center on Friday.
“Coach Burton and I knew Schaefer had the skill and mental toughness to be in the winners circle tonight,” head coach Haley Schoolfield said. “We are thrilled with how she represented SMU throughout the day in Wellington and we know this is just the beginning of a very bright future for Schaefer. We would also like to thank WEF and Jill Townsend for providing a great venue and horses to showcase our sport.”
Raposa defeated Santana Wright (No. 9 South Dakota State) in the first round of equitation over fences 90-0, earning the high point award in the process. She then edged No. 2 Auburn’s Jennifer Waxman 85-74 and Kimberly Hewson Budnik (Fresno State) 89-86 to make it to the championship round. She beat Samantha Schaefer (No. 6 Baylor) 92-87 to bring home the gold. Raposa is now 8-1 in equitation over fences this season.
Raposa and the No. 10 Mustangs will begin their spring season when they host LSU on Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. at BuckBranch Farm.
