WELLINGTON, Fla. – Senior Julianna Fischer defeated Kansas State’s Rachel Webster 83-79 in the first round of the Winter Equestrian Festival Collegiate Challenge on Friday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

Fischer was later knocked out in the quarterfinals by Oklahoma State’s Sammy Esler by a count of 85-70. Esler went on to finish second at the challenge. The Wellington, Fla., native is now 6-4 this season over fences.

“Julie went out there on a big stage and rode just like you can depend on a senior to ride,” head coach Natalie Burton said. “She gave two very gusty rides and although sometimes the chips don’t fall your way, I couldn’t be more proud of her, and the way she represented SMU today.”

SMU will resume its 2013-14 season when it travels to No. 5 New Mexico State for its spring opener on February 15 for an 11 a.m. CT start.
