DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 10 SMU equestrian team defeated No. 1 South Carolina, 5-4, to close out the fall season Sunday morning at BuckBranch Farm. Freshman Schafer Raposa earned MVP honors in equitation over fences. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 5-2 on the season, while the Gamecocks are now 4-2 on the year.
"We could not be more proud of our team today," assistant coach Natalie Burton said. "They set their minds on getting the win this morning, and they never let up. It feels great to end the fall season with a win over the No. 1 team in the country, but it feels even better to see the team come together, determined to win, and succeed."
SMU opened the day with a 3-2 win over fences, rallying for three consecutive victories after trailing South Carolina, 2-0. Raposa continued her stellar freshman, earning MVP honors for her 88-78 win over Emily Reynolds. All-America sophomore Emma Roberts edged Katherine Schmidt, 83-82, for another Mustang point. Sophomore Courtney Line posted a 79-76 win over Sally Henry.
The teams split the flat, 2-2, as sophomore Greer Hindle tied Samantha Kraus 82-82. Junior captain Julianna Fischer turned in a strong performance against Madison Cameron, winning the matchup 87-82. Freshman Mary Abbruzzese clinched the win for SMU with her 82-78 defeat of Kelsey Hart.
The Mustangs open the spring schedule on Feb. 16 against No. 7 Baylor at 10 a.m. at BuckBranch Farm.
