DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU equestrian team defeated Fresno State, 7-4, Thursday afternoon at BuckBranch Farm. Senior Mallory Olson and sophomore Renick Townsend were named MVPs. The final raw score was SMU 918, Fresno State 900. With the win, the Mustangs move to 2-0 on the season.
"The ladies battled really hard after losing the flat today," head coach Haley Schoolfield said. "They came to the fences part of the competition with a lot of determination. It was hot, and they were tired, but they pushed through. They made no mistakes today and really could not have been any better. Their hard work is really paying off and it's great to pick up another win against a quality opponent."
Fresno State won the flat 3-2, but Townsend won MVP honors with a score of 80. Molly Osier also garnered a point for SMU earning a 73. The Bulldogs edged the Mustangs 455-454 in the raw score on the flat.
SMU excelled on the fences, earning five of a possible six points to win the meet. Olson earned MVP over fences with an 80. Senior captain Jordyn Pettersen netted a score of 80 as well, earning another point for the Mustangs. Also picking up wins were senior Emily Gardner (78), Lauren Hogan (79) and freshman Emma Roberts (77). The raw score over fences was SMU 464, Fresno State 445.
SMU takes its first road trip of the season as the Mustangs compete at Oklahoma State on Saturday, Oct. 1.
