Fischer Wins Flat Championship
March 24, 2013
KATY, Texas (SMU) – SMU junior Julianna Fischer was the champion of the flat competition at the Pin Oak Invitational on Sunday.
“Julie really made her statement today, heading into the national championships next month,” equestrian coach Natalie Burton said. “She is so poised and composed in the show ring that there is no doubt she will be a tough kid to beat on the flat come the post-season.”
Fischer shut out her LSU opponent 168-0 in the preliminary round of the equitation on flat competition. She then edged the opposing rider from Fresno State in the final round to secure the championship with a score of 143.5-132.
Sophomore Courtney Line was invited to represent the Mustangs in the equitation over fences portion of the competition. Despite her strong ride and solid score of 79, she was ultimately defeated in the first round by a rider from LSU, who went on to be the eventual equitation over fences champion.
“Courtney rode the horse she had really well, and the win could have gone either way,” claimed head coach Haley Schoolfield. “She has put in so much practice on her own time to prepare for this weekend that, as a coach, I couldn’t be more proud of her nor more confident in her ability to lead her teammates through nationals.”
Fischer, Line, and the Mustangs will compete at the National Championships on Apr. 18 in Waco, Texas.
