BROOKINGS, S.D. (SMU) - The No. 9 Mustangs edged No. 10 South Dakota State, 6-4, Sunday, with a raw score of 803-747. Rookie Alex Butterworth earned an MVP nod for the team during the equitation over fences portion of the competition. SMU is currently 8-3 this season.

“I am so proud of all my teammates today,” sophomore Courtney Line said. “Everyone had amazing rides and I definitely look forward to more success for our team at Nationals this April!”

The Mustangs performed well over fences by dominating South Dakota State 4-1, taking the raw score 394-335. Butterworth earned MVP honors with her 83-69 victory over Marielle Golden. Schaefer Raposa, another freshman, defeated Jordan Goodall 74-71 to give the Mustangs another point. Courtney Line had an impressive ride, defeating Megan Violand 82-40. Colleen McKenzie outscored Jenna Boscardin 77-75 to earn SMU’s final point.

SMU was defeated in equitation on the flat 3-2 with a raw score of 412-409. Mary Abruzzese and Greer Hindle were the only riders to earn points for the Mustangs. Abruzzese outscored Megan Schiffman 86-83 and Hindle edged Jordan Goodall 82-81.

SMU competes next at the Pin Oak Invitational on March 30 in Katy, Texas.
