DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team opened the 2004-05 campaign with a 55-45 win over visiting Sam Houston State Friday evening at Moody Coliseum on the campus of SMU. SMU improves to 9-5 in season openers under head coach Rhonda Rompola.
In the first half, both teams started off with an extremely quick pace, but could not get on the scoreboard. But Juli Colli hit the first basket of the year with a three-point field goal at the 18:49 mark - her first points as an SMU Mustang. The game was close until midway through the first half when SMU on a 8-0 run with just under four minutes remaining in the half and close out the first half with a 37-24 lead.
In the second half, SMU (1-0) upped its defensive intensity and created offense from its defense, extending its lead to 25 points (51-26) at the 12:09 mark. But SMU got ice cold from the field and scored only four points the rest of the game. Sam Houston State (0-1) chipped away at the lead but it was too much to overcome.
Topping all Mustang scorers was senior Shonte Roberts who collected 10 points in 13 minutes of play. Juli Colli added nine points with three steals. SMU's nine blocks tied the mark for the third-most collected in a single game.
SMU continues its homestand with a contest against Maine (0-2) Sunday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
