Mustangs Face Bowling Green State In WNIT Thursday

DALLAS (SMU) - The Mustangs earned a spot in the Women's National Invitation Tournament where they will face Bowling Green State on Thursday in Bowling Green, Ohio. SMU, which went 21-9 to win 20 games in a season for the ninth time, picked up a bid as the top team in Conference USA with a 12-4 record against conference opponents. Bowling Green State went 22-10 for the season, and posted an 11-5 record in the Mid-American Conference.
Junior Keena Mays, the C-USA Player of the Year, led the team 18.5 points per game and is shooting a league-high 40.7 percent from 3-point range. Senior Alisha Filmore and junior Akil Simpson were each named to the All-C-USA second team, joining Mays, who was also a first team selection. Filmore is scoring 12.2 points per game, and Simpson is scoring 10.5 with six double-doubles this season.
SMU is making its fifth appearance in the WNIT, where the Mustangs are 2-4 all-time, and its 18th postseason tournament berth all-time. The Mustangs last made a postseason appearance in 2010, losing to New Mexico in the first round of the WNIT. Filmore was a freshman on the 2009-10 squad, and played 16 minutes at New Mexico with three rebounds and an assist.
The Mustangs first appeared in the WNIT in 1993, going 2-1 in Amarillo, Texas. The Mustangs also made the postseason tournament in 2005 and 2009, falling on the road in the first round. This is the 16th WNIT, and the fourth since the field expanded to 64 teams in 2010. SMU is one of five Conference USA schools in the field. With a win in the first round, the Mustangs would face the winner between Akron and Duquesne on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.
