DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's basketball team won its third regular season conference championship, going 12-4 in Conference USA this season to earn the No. 1 seed in the C-USA Championship March 13-16 in Tulsa, Okla. The Mustangs, 21-8 overall, will face the winner between eighth-seeded UCF and ninth-seeded Houston Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Tulsa Convention Center. SMU went 2-1 against the Knights and Cougars this season, beating UCF 69-54 in Dallas and splitting the season series with Houston, winning 58-54 in Dallas and falling 65-58 in Houston.

SMU is second in in Conference USA, averaging 69.2 points per game, and third in scoring margin, out-scoring opponents by 7.9 points. Keena Mays led the team and ranked second in the league with 19.3 points per game, and would rank in the top 20 nationally shooting 42.4 percent from 3-point range.

Head coach Rhonda Rompola, who won her 400th career game on Feb. 21 against Tulsa, guided the Mustangs to a C-USA regular season title in 2008-09 with a 12-4 record in league play and the 1999-00 Western Athletic Conference crown with a 12-2 record. SMU also has two conference tournament championships. The Mustangs beat UTEP 73-57 to win the 2008 C-USA tournament, and knocked off Colorado State 65-49 to win the 1999 WAC tournament.
