SMU Ousted by Fresno State in WAC Tournament Play, 71-53
Reno, Nev. - The SMU women's basketball team's hopes of a WAC Tournament title were thrashed Wednesday afternoon with a 71-53 loss to Fresno State in quarterfinal action of the 2005 WAC Tournament. With the loss, SMU posts a 19-10 record while Fresno State improves to 20-9 overall and will face top-seed Louisiana Tech in Friday's semifinal action.
The Mustangs came out sluggish right from the opening whistle while Fresno State executed and hit its shots. SMU found itself down early in a low-scoring first half, and could never recover. The Bulldog guards pressured SMU and forced the Mustangs into low-percentage shots. Fresno State notched 12 offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play. With 12 turnovers, SMU was down by 10 points at intermission, 30-20.
In the second half, SMU still could not find its shooting range while the Bulldogs continued its smothering defensive pressure, allowing only one shot and grabbing the rebound. The Mustangs were down by as many as 24 points (68-44) with 3:10 remaining. It was too little, too late for SMU, cutting the Bulldog lead to 18 points at the final buzzer.
Top scorer for SMU was freshman guard Katy Cobb with 17 points. Freshman Janielle Dodds added 10 points and seven rebounds. The game's leading scorer was Fresno State's Mirenda Swearengin with 19 points and six assists.
SMU must now play the waiting game to see if a WNIT post-season invitation will be issued. The bids will be announced late Sunday afternoon following the NCAA's team selections.
