IRVING, Texas (SMU) - Akil Simpson was named to the Conference USA All-Conference Team by the league coaches, conference officials announced Sunday. The sophomore forward was voted to the second team after leading the Mustangs in scoring and rebounds this season.
Simpson, a native of Duncanville, Texas, averaged 10.7 points per game, 18th in Conference USA, and scored 11.8 points per game in conference games. She pulled down a team-high 7.5 rebounds and finished the season with eight double-doubles.
Simpson scored at least 20 points in three games this season, including a career-high 25 points at Tulane. She grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds against Houston, and had at least 10 rebounds 10 times. She has scored 478 points in two seasons with the Mustangs, and grabbed 359 rebounds.
The powerful post player also led the team with 88 free throws made, shooting 65.2 percent, and had 47 steals and 46 assists. She was third in the conference, shooting 52.4 percent from the field, and led the league, shooting 54.7 percent in conference games.
Simpson was also named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last season.
