SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (SMU/ Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame) - SMU senior guard Keena Mays was named to the 2014 Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday. The award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
Mays leads the American Athletic Conference and ranks in the top 50 nationally in scoring, posting 19.5 points per game. Mays leads SMU and is sixth in the league with 3.9 assists, and her 1.9 steals per outing is eighth in the conference. She is also third on the team with 5.9 rebounds. The Arlington, Texas, native has scored in double digits in all but one game this season, eclipsing the 20-point mark eight times. Mays also scored 30 points in consecutive games, tallying a career-high 34 at UTEP on Dec. 7 and 32 at North Texas on Dec. 21.
Candidates for the award exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. Previous winners include Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Sue Bird (Connecticut) and Diana Taurasi (Connecticut).
"It's amazing to be able to have my name associated with some of the best point guards and most well-rounded female athletes at the college level," Lieberman said. "This is the first year the award is hosted by the Hall of Fame and I think the candidates will be even more aware of how prestigious this honor is."
Mays leads the Mustangs into a home contest against No. 5 Louisville at Moody Coliseum on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT. Tickets are available here.
