DALLAS (SMU) - Samantha Mahnesmith reached double-figures for the third time in four games, scoring 15 points to lead the Mustangs to a 62-56 win over Texas Southern Wednesday in Moody Coliseum.
The sophomore was 5-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc, to lead SMU. Christine Elliott added 13 points, reaching double-digits for the 11th time in 12 games, and Brittany Gilliam went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to finish with 11 points.
The Mustangs charged out of the gate, opening a 24-14 lead over the first 14 minutes of the first half, but the Lady Tigers fought back. Texas Southern held SMU to just three points over the final six minutes of the half to cut the lead to one at halftime, 27-26.
SMU shot just 27.6-percent in the second half, connecting on only 8-of-29 attempts, including just 3-of-12 from 3-point range. Texas Southern was 13-of-29 in the second half, keeping the Mustangs within reach, but SMU didn't give up a single 3-point basket in the second half to escape with the victory.
Haley Day was dominant off the glass, finishing with a season-high 12 rebounds. She also dropped in seven points, going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe. Elliott grabbed nine boards, just missing her third double-double of the season.
The Mustangs will be back in action Saturday, taking on Utah. The game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. CST.
