Austin, Texas (SMU) - The SMU men?s tennis team had another successful day at the Wilson/ITA South Central Regional Championship Saturday as both doubles teams were victorious in the round of 32 and moved into the round of 16. The top SMU duo of Oredsson and Soderberg won 8-2 over Reuda and Wodzinski of TSU, while Chingoka and McNaughton defeated Alatorre and Kirby from Lamar 8-3.
In other doubles action, Chingoka and McNaughton later went on to win their match in the round of 16 over Ellison and Ley from Louisiana-Lafayette 8-6 and moved into the quarterfinals. Only a few matches in the round of 16 were played today as action was suspended due to darkness. Two rounds of doubles will be played on Sunday.
In singles, Henrik Soderberg won his match in the round of 32 in thrilling fashion over Dimitrio Martinez of Texas Tech 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 and advanced to the round of 16. He then dropped his round of 16 match to Callum Beale of Texas in another three set match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. All other SMU players dropped their matches in the round of 32.
Head coach Carl Neufeld was impressed with Soderberg's performances.
"Henrik played the match of his life against Beale," Neufeld said. "Sometimes they don't always end up like you would want, but he gave two amazing performances today and I am really proud of him."
Action will resume at the Wilson/ITA South Central Championships on Sunday, Oct. 24 with doubles at 9:00 a.m. and singles at 10:30 a.m. Complete results can be found here.
