Mustangs To Compete At USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships Beginning Tomorrow

WACO, Texas (SMU) - Five SMU Mustangs will converge upon Waco, Texas, starting tomorrow for the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships. Players from 16 schools will compete in both singles and doubles with champions crowned on Tuesday.

This will mark the third event of the fall for the men's tennis squad. Most recently, the team competed at the ITA All-American Championships with very strong results.

No. 73 Arturs Kazijevs advanced to the second round of the consolation singles bracket, winning four matches overall. He won three in singles qualifiers and then defeated No. 76 Ace Matias of UNLV in the first round of the consolation bracket. The Riga, Latvia, native is 6-3 on the season.

Nate Lammons and Alex Sanders had a stellar run in doubles, winning four straight matches in qualifying to advance to the main draw. Lammons and Sanders are 6-2 this season, winning their first six matches as a doubles pair.

Mischa Nowicki and Julio Olaya will also compete at the tournament, with Nowicki combining with Kazijevs for doubles. The duo is ranked 43rd in the nation.
