Men's Tennis Falls to Rice 4-2 in WAC Championship Semis

HONOLULU, Hawaii -The SMU men's tennis team fell to Rice on Saturday, 4-2, in the semifinals of the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Championships at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs (ITA #41) surprised Rice by taking the doubles point with 8-5 wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 courts. But the Owls (ITA #39) battled back in singles play with wins at the Nos. 3 and 5 courts. SMU evened the match with a victory at No. 4 but the Owls closed out the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 6. Robert Searle, ranked No. 40 in the ITA national rankings, came from behind with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Paul McNaughton at No. 1 for the match-clincher.

The defending champion Owls are seeking their second title and will meet top-seeded Boise State in the finals. The championship match is set for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
