Men's Tennis Routs Rice 5-1

HOUSTON (SMU) - The SMU men?s tennis team closed out the regular season with an upset victory over No. 33 Rice on Sunday, 5-1, in Houston. The Mustangs swept the doubles matches to jump out to the early 1-0 lead and only dropped one singles match en route to the victory. SMU finishes the regular season 14-11.

The No. 1 pairing of Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier dispatched of Searle/Harknett 8-4 to post their 15th doubles win of the season. Peter Oredsson and Henrik Soderberg won at No. 2 doubles, while Gwinyai Chingoka and David Kuczer had the easiest match at No. 3, winning 8-1, to complete the doubles sweep.

SMU had little trouble in singles, winning at spots two through five to grab the victory. Chingoka was victorious at No. 2, needing three sets to put away Haerle to get another point in SMU?s favor. Murgier then won for the seventh time at No. 3, taking care of Ben Harknett 7-5, 6-4. Oredsson won his 24th match on the year and 13th in dual match play at No. 4, while Soderberg came out on top at No. 5 to close out the SMU win.
