WACO, Texas - The SMU men's tennis team fell to the No. 1 Baylor Bears on Sunday, 6-1, at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead after taking two of three from the Bears in doubles action. Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier upset Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga on the first court 8-4. Then, SMU clinched the doubles point by when Peter Oredsson and Henrik Soderberg took the match on the second court from Vladimir Portnov and Lars Poerschke 8-5. Baylor then went on to sweep the singles matches. SMU slips to 13-10 with the loss, breaking a three-match winning streak.
The Bears quickly took the lead in singles play by taking the first-two matches from the Mustangs on courts one and two. No. 1 Dorsch gave Baylor its first point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over McNaughton in the first court. No. 28 Benjamin Becker followed suit just moments later by taking the point from Gwinyai Chingoka 6-3, 6-2 to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
No. 21 Poerschke extended Baylor's lead to 3-1 after defeating Murgier 6-3, 6-0. Zgaga clinched the win for Baylor by defeating Oredsson 6-4, 6-4 on the fourth court to give the Bears their fourth point.
SMU returns to action on Wednesday as the Mustangs travel to Ft. Worth for a match up against TCU. Match time is set for 2 p.m. CST.
