Cowboys Defeat Mustangs 5-2 in Men's Tennis

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men?s tennis team dropped a hard fought match to the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Wednesday, 5-2, at Haggar Tennis Stadium. Oklahoma State escaped with the doubles point to lead early 1-0. In singles, SMU grabbed points at Nos. 1 and 6, but were unable to rally for the win.

The No. 2 duo of Henrik Soderberg and Peter Oredsson improved to 10-2 on the season with an 8-5 win over Kuharic and Diaz. After SMU lost at No. 3, Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier took Van Elden and Byrnes to the limit at No. 1, but eventually fell 9-8 to lose the doubles point.

In Singles, McNaughton won the first set 6-3 over No. 30 Mark Van Elden at No. 1. McNaughton then jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the second set, which prompted Van Elden to forfeit, giving SMU its first point and knotting the match at 1-1. Freshman David Kuczer notched the other SMU point at No. 6, dispatching of Diaz in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Kuczer now owns a 13-4 singled record on the season. Oklahoma State then finished the match by winning at Nos. 2-5 for the 5-2 final.

The SMU men?s tennis team returns to action Fri., Apr. 1, when they host WAC foe Tulsa at 2 p.m.
