Mustangs Extinguish Flames 7-0 in Men's Tennis
DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men?s tennis team easily defeated the UIC Flames on Wednesday, 7-0, at Haggar Tennis Stadium. The Mustangs came out strong and swept the doubles matches to gain the early advantage. They were just as dominant in singles, cruising to the easy win to give head coach Carl Neufled bragging rights over his younger brother, UIC head coach Hans Neufeld. SMU improves to 10-6 with the win.
After the doubles sweep, SMU is now 34-10 in dual match doubles on the season. The No. 1 duo of Paul McNaughton and Fede Murgier improved to 9-5, Henrik Soderberg and Peter Oredsson are now 8-2 at the No. 2 spot, while Gwinyai Chingoka and David Kuezer stand at 9-2 at No. 3.
In singles, SMU had only one match forced into a third set. WAC player of the week Kuezer kept his un-blemished record at the No. 5 singles spot, improving to 5-0 with his 6-4, 6-4 win over Eric Fey. Elliot Engberg also remained undefeated at the No. 4 position, winning in straight sets over Andy Lockhart 6-4, 7-6 and is now 3-0. SMU is 11-6 in Nos. 3-6 singles in dual matches this season.
The men?s tennis team returns to the court Sun., Mar 27, when they host Tulane at 12 p.m.
