DALLAS (SMU) - Head coach Carl Neufeld won his 400th career match Saturday afternoon, as the men?s tennis team defeated Illinois State 6-1. SMU swept the doubles matches to begin the day and continued their dominance in singles play. SMU improves to 8-4 with the win, while Neufeld?s career record stands at 400-201 overall and 219-97 at SMU.

In doubles, the duo of Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier got things rolling for the Mustangs with an 8-5 victory over Uskokovic and Pettinari. Moments later, Gwinyai Chingoka and David Keuzer clinched the point for SMU with an 8-4 win. The No. 2 pairing of Peter Oredsson and Henrik Soderberg closed out the doubles sweep, winning 8-6.

Singles play saw the Mustangs jump out early once again, but the team needed help from the bottom of the lineup to set the final margin. With SMU leading 3-0 and the match still in the balance, Oredsson got the clinching point for the Mustangs at No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-4. The Mustangs then continued to win at Nos. 5 and 6.

Chingoka had one of his more dominant performances on the year, winning at No. 1 over Uskokovic in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Murgier also showed toughness, battling back after dropping the first set 2-6, to claim his win at No.3 in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

The men?s tennis team returns to the court Sunday, March 13, when they host the Montana State Bobcats at 12 p.m. at Haggar Tennis Stadium.
