Baylor Outlasts SMU in Men's Tennis

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU men?s tennis team jumped out to an early lead over the No. 1 Baylor Bears at Haggar Tennis Stadium on Wednesday, but were unable to hang on for the upset, falling 5-2. The No. 2 doubles pairing of Henrik Soderberg and Peter Oredsson got SMU on the board first with an 8-6 win. Minutes later, Gwinyai Chingoka and David Kuezer also won 8-6 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point and give SMU the early 1-0 lead.

In singles, SMU fell in straight sets at Nos. 1 and 2. At No. 3, senior Paul McNaughton rallied to grab a three-set victory over Matija Zgaga and evened the score at 2-2. Baylor then won out at Nos. 4-6 to clinch the win and head home with the 5-2 victory.

With the doubles wins, Oredsson and Soderberg are now 5-1 at the No. 2 position and Cingoka and Kuezer are also 5-1 at No. 3. SMU stands at 7-4 on the season.

The men?s tennis team returns to the court on Saturday, March 9, when they host the Illinois State Redbirds at 12 p.m.
