NIS, Serbia (SMU) – Former SMU men’s tennis All-American, Johan Brunstrom, helped Sweden earn its lone victory in the first round of the squad’s Davis Cup series versus Serbia. Brunstrom teamed with Robert Lindstedt to defeat Janko Tipsarevic and Nenad Zimonjic in a four-hour-plus thriller that ended 6-3 3-6 6-7(4) 7-6(3) 10-8.
Tipsarevic is Serbia’s top ranked singles player on the team, coming in at No. 9, and the second-highest ranked Serbian player behind world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Zimonjic is currently the world’s No. 6 double player.
The win was a great accomplishment in Brunstrom’s career. The former Mustang is currently the No. 93 doubles player in the world, but has been ranked as high as No. 31.
Brunstrom was an All-American at SMU in doubles in 2001 and 2002 as well as in singles in 2003. He won the 2001 ITA Indoor Doubles Championship with Jon Wallmark. The duo was also NCAA Doubles runner-up with in 2001, the same year the team made the NCAA Final Four. Brunstrom then teamed with Eric Cohn as the duo finished runner-up at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championship. Brunstrom was just the sixth SMU men's tennis player to become a three-time All-American.
