DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs will play their second and third home matches of the season as they host the Abilene Christian Wildcats at noon on Saturday and the UT-Pan American Broncs at noon on Sunday at the Bent Tree Country Club.
The Mustangs are 3-3 after a win over UTSA on Jan. 31 and a loss to No. 9 Texas A&M on Monday. Abilene Christian is 4-4 in its first season as a Division I program, while UT-Pan American is 2-2 with a match at Arkansas still on its slate for Friday afternoon.
"We're making progress as a team and we're looking forward to playing some tough teams this weekend," SMU Head Coach Carl Neufeld said. "Abilene Christian has always been a top Division II school and now they're in Division I. They've always played us tough so we're looking forward to the challenge."
The Wildcats have won two straight matches, beating Texas-Permian Basin and McMurry in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Mustangs have won four straight over the Wildcats, with the most recent meeting being a 6-1 SMU victory on March 10, 2011. UT-Pan American has also won its last two, beating Prairie View A&M and Oral Roberts on Saturday. The most recent match between the two programs came on Jan. 21, 2012, a 7-0 Mustangs win.
Both matches this weekend will be held at the Bent Tree Country Club, located about 20 minutes north of SMU. Fans are encouraged to come support their Mustangs, and admission is free.
"We're excited about fans coming out to Bent Tree Country Club and we're looking forward to another good turnout," Neufeld said."
SMU freshman Arkidjas Slobodkins has won four straight singles matches and is 4-1 overall. Arturs Kazijevs holds a combined 10-7 record between the fall and the spring, and the tandem of Nate Lammons and Alex Sanders lead the Mustangs with a 12-5 overall doubles record.
