DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU menís tennis team defeated Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M both by scores of 7-0 on Sunday, to improve their record to 5-0 on the spring season. Head coach Carl Neufeld used the matches to give some of his younger players their first taste of action.
In doubles, freshmen David Kuezer and Adolfo Solares picked up two wins in the No. 2 position, both by a final of 8-2. The No. 1 duo of Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier played only one match on the day, easily defeating Knobloch and Castenada of TSU 8-0. Playing in the No. 3 position, Elliot Engberg and Chad Fernandez split their doubles matches, defeating the pair from Prairie View 8-2 and dropping their match against TSU 5-8.
The Mustangs also dominated in singles play throughout every position in the lineup. McNaughton and Gwinyai Chingoka both collected wins in the No. 1 position, while Solares won his two matches at No. 6. The rest of the SMU squad played in various lineup positions and all had strong performances in leading to the two-match singles sweep.
Contests from here on out begin to get tougher for SMU as they return to the court next Saturday, Jan. 29, at 12 p.m., when they square off against Texas.
